At BuildingPoint Canada, we take pride in being more than just a supplier—we’re partners in helping our clients succeed. And one particular project with a long-time client stands out, showcasing how we were able to bring a real solution to their daily challenges through the power of the Trimble X9 3D Laser Scanner.
The Call for Help
It all started when one of our clients reached out, frustrated with the hurdles they were facing on their job sites. Despite years of experience, they were running into some familiar roadblocks: time-consuming scans, constant rework, inaccurate measurements, and inefficiencies that were pushing them behind schedule.
“Everything takes too long,” they told us. “We’re scanning, but we’re not confident in the data. We’re making too many trips back to the office for verification, and it’s slowing us down. Is there something better out there?”
We knew there was. Enter the Trimble X9.
Introducing the Solution: Trimble X9
We invited the client to our office for a demonstration. From the moment we set up the X9 3D Laser Scanner, you could see their interest piquing. We explained how this technology wasn’t just a step forward—it was a leap. The X9’s ability to capture data with extreme accuracy while remaining incredibly easy to use had caught their attention.
And when we mentioned its ability to view scan data, 3D models, and field layout points in real-time through Trimble FieldLink, all on a tablet controller, their reaction said it all. “So, you’re saying we don’t have to wait for the data to be processed? We can see everything while we’re still on-site?” they asked.
That’s right. No more second-guessing measurements or waiting for office verification. The Trimble X9 allowed them to visualize everything, right in the field.
Putting the X9 to the Test
A week later, the client decided to put the X9 through its paces on a challenging project. They were working on a large industrial renovation, with dark surfaces and complex geometries that had always been difficult to scan. Normally, this would require multiple setups and several days to collect the necessary data.
But with the X9’s longer range (up to 150 meters) and ability to scan up to a million points per second, the team was able to cover the entire site faster than they ever had before. And those tricky surfaces? The X9 handled them with ease, capturing detailed point clouds in a fraction of the time.
What really impressed them was the in-field registration feature. By using Trimble’s FieldLink software, the scans were automatically registered in the field, which meant that when they walked off the site, they left knowing their data was accurate and ready to use—no rework needed.
Eliminating Downtime with Smart Calibration
Another point of frustration for the client had always been the downtime caused by equipment maintenance. Their previous scanners required annual calibration, which was both costly and time-consuming. But with the Trimble X9’s built-in self-calibration, those concerns were a thing of the past.
They were relieved to discover that they could now operate with the confidence that their scanner was always accurate, with no more unexpected interruptions or costly maintenance schedules.
Streamlining Communication with Trimble Connect
As the project progressed, it became clear how much of an impact the X9 had on their collaboration process. The client could now export scan data directly to Trimble Connect cloud software while still in the field. This meant that the team back at the office had immediate access to the data, making real-time collaboration possible.
“What used to take days now takes hours,” they told us. “We’re not only communicating better, but we’re also avoiding missteps because everyone’s working off the same, up-to-date data.”
Scalable, Flexible, and Future-Ready
One of the most valuable aspects of the Trimble X9, for this client and many others, is its flexibility. We explained to them how they could configure the scanner to fit their current needs and scale it up as their projects grew. They could even upgrade the licensing plans over time to unlock new features and software, ensuring that their technology investment was always delivering maximum value.
“This is exactly what we need,” they said. “A system that grows with us, not something we’ll outgrow.”
The Results? A Game-Changer
By the end of the project, the results spoke for themselves. Our client had completed the job faster, with more precision, and with far fewer headaches than they had experienced in the past. They had reduced downtime, minimized rework, and—most importantly—regained control over their workflow.
“We didn’t just keep up with the demands of the project. We got ahead of them,” they shared with us afterward. “The Trimble X9 changed the way we work. And the fact that we can use it for everything from as-built verifications to QA/QC and renovations? It’s a game-changer.”
